Module: The Museum as Corrective?
The reassessment or, in some cases, first appraisal of artists will be carried out under the slogan >The Museum as Corrective?< and debates led on the criteria of collecting art as well as various concepts on quality. In the process, the question as to the defining power of the museum will also be raised.

For the exhibition PUZZLE, ten different groups will each exhibit in one of the exhibition spaces in the Neubau over half a year, whereby each group is made up of many participants. In this way, new spaces will be created at irregular intervals. PUZZLE is a constantly changing exhibit. The involved groups have a direct or indirect connection to the house collection: there are the members of the Friends Organisation, who are responsible for most of the GfZK's purchases, then there are the art mediators from GFZK FOR YOU or the mediation team, who constantly deal with questions about art education - especially in relation to the collection in recent years. The conservators are the ones who are devoted to questions of conservation and make inquiries concerning the condition and handling of the collection. In addition, the artists are the ones who grapple with questions related to inventory and collecting. The custodian and the portfolio manager of the GfZK both have the most intensive, albeit different, relationship with the collection. In addition, there will be zones for potential purchases for works made in connection with GfZK, but where museum lacked the money to acquire them. Then there will be an exhibit space for collecting differently with works which would fit into the collection well, yet don't fit in with or weren't envisioned by the collection's concept. Works related or referring to the collection by students from the Intermedia class of the HGB will make up another group.
The concept's key idea is that a collection can be seen as a puzzle whose individual parts make up a whole, which is constantly expandable and thus incomplete. The Neubau, with its patchwork of shard-shaped rooms, serves as the formal framework. Every room follows its own concept.
The idea for the exhibit is tailored to the layout of the GfZK-2 (Neubau) – which even inspired the exhibit. The building distinguishes itself through its openness and transparency, its flexibility and difference compared to other presentation rooms. The PUZZLE exhibition's perspective on the collection should be seen in the same spirit as the rooms. It shouldn't be rigid but flexible; not mono-perspective but multi-perspective; not exclusively specialized but inclusive of outside expertise. PUZZLE’s identity is that of a stage and experiment whose outcome is incalculable.
For four years the Museum for Contemporary Art has been carrying out long-term exhibitions of its collection. In recent years, they were >German Histories<, >KW - Hommage à Klaus Werner< and >Nichtorte, Orte<. These exhibitions, most of which lasted one year, always took place in the Villa. Starting with the collection exhibition PUZZLE, the concept of both houses will change: The Villa will house the temporary exhibits while the Neubau will be devoted to the presentation of the collection. This concept is embedded in an annual programme where we explore the question what >A Commission for Art?< could be.
The graphic artists Annalena von Helldorff and Toni Schönbuchner will develop a display for PUZZLE, which will visualize the exhibit's change over time. The large display windows of the Neubau will act as an over-dimensional board that documents and informs about what was, what can now be seen, and what will be.
